Avoid Content of Non-Renewable Mineral Resources

Basic

Requirements and Criteria Type:
  • Technical Specification (Requirement Specifications)

Main Objective:

Motive

Globally, natural deposits of non-renewable mineral resources are limited. If the extraction of global resources continues to increase by 3% each year up to 2050, and then stabilises, available deposits of zinc, copper and chromium will be exhausted by 2100, 2150 and 2250, respectively. Within 80-230 years it is estimated that these resources will be scarce.

Argument

Minimising the use of construction materials that contain zinc, copper and chromium will save global, non-renewable mineral resources.

Requirement Specification:

Exterior cladding (facade and roof panels) that contains, in terms of weight, more than 20% zinc, copper or chromium must not be used.

Contractors must submit a declaration that unapproved products have not been used, with the exception of those for which a written application has been submitted to, and approved by, the client.

Pipes that contain, in terms of weight, more than 20% zinc, copper or chromium must not be used.

If there are no good alternatives to copper-free pipes, this must be documented and an application submitted to the project manager for approval of their use.

Any non-conformities must be documented in a reporting system for the project.

If unapproved exterior cladding (facade and roof panels) and pipes that contain, in terms of weight, more than 20% zinc, copper and chromium are used, the contractor must pay a fee per product and volume used.

If there are no good alternatives to copper-free pipes, this must be documented and an application submitted to the project manager for approval of their use. The documentation must be submitted to the client on an ongoing basis via the project's non-conformance system.
