Covers for more robust tablets

Groups:
  • Tablets
Category:
  • Product lifetime extensions

Basic

Requirements and Criteria Type:
  • Contract Terms

Main Objective:

The purpose is to demand products designed for long life. The requirement contributes to the purpose by ensuring that the contracting authority gets robust notebooks and tablets that are designed to withstand everyday wear and accidents. This gives the equipment reduced costs related to repairs and a longer lifetime.

Requirement Specification:

The combination of tablet and cover shall constitute a separate order line with own order number, that is a so-called “default order line” for the purchase of tablets.

Buying a tablet without a cover shall require an active choice.

Information about the Requirement Specification:

There are generally two advantages in requesting equipment that is tested according to a robustness standard:

  1. The equipment will be more rugged and withstand more – this gives the equipment a longer expected lifetime
  2. If one plans to resell equipment, one may achieve a higher residual value – the equipment has a higher value in its “second life” compared to other equipment

The goal of the sub-requirement is to prevent orderers who are less familiar with the procurement’s goal and requirements from unconsciously limiting the tablets’ lifetime by not getting a cover.

Advanced

Requirements and Criteria Type:
  • Contract Terms

Main Objective:

The purpose is to ensure increased longevity of tablets. By protecting tablets with covers that are tested for robustness, they will better with stand rough handling, for instance by pupils. This will contribute to reducing costs related to repairs and extending the tablets’ lifetime.

Requirement Specification:

Covers tested for or designed according to robustness standard such as US MIL-STD-810G or corresponding test procedures, shall be offered [to tablets that are indicated to be used by pupils in school].

Buying a tablet without a cover shall require an active choice.

If the contracting authority so wishes, the combination of tablet and cover shall constitute a separate order line with an own order number, that is a so-called “default order line” for the purchase of tablets.

Documentation of the Requirement Specification:

Documentation on robustness shall be provided upon demand by the contracting authority, for instance in contract meeting.

Information about the Requirement Specification:

There are two main advantages in requesting robust covers:
1) The tablets will withstand more, which could extend the tablets’ lifetime.

2) If one plans to resell used tablets, one may achieve a higher residual value when the overall when the tablets are well-kept.

Tablets are often handled with little care, and they can easily be exposed to falling down and external shocks. It will be smart to consider the advanced level of the contract terms especially when procuring tablets to primary and secondary school pupils.

Tests for robustness, such as US MIL-STD-810G include many different tests such as shock test, and it is smart to ask what tests the covers fulfil.

The aim is also to prevent those who perform the order, who might be less familiar with the procurement’s goal and requirements, from unconsciously forgetting to order a cover.

It seems to be fewer tablets that fulfil robustness tests than notebooks. Therefore it is a good alternative to ask for tablet covers that are tested for robustness.
