Robust textiles on furniture products

Groups:
  • Nye møbler
Category:
  • Fremme lang levetid

Basic

Requirements and Criteria Type:
  • Technical Specification (Requirement Specifications)

Main Objective:

The purpose of the requirement is to ensure that requirements are stipulated regarding the correct quality standards for the textiles that are used on the furniture products in order to ensure longevity.

Requirement Specification:

Where the upholstery used on upholstered furniture includes materials based on textile fabrics, they shall meet all the physical quality requirements set out in the table below. The requirements apply to all types of textiles (e.g. woven and knitted), and all types of furniture with textiles.

Quality requirements

Method

Level - basic

Colourfastness upon wet-rubbing

ISO 105 X12

>Level 2-3

Colourfastness upon dry-rubbing

ISO 105 X12

>Level 4

Colourfastness to light

ISO 105 B02

>Level 5

Fabric resistance to pilling

EN ISO 12945-2

>Level 4-51

Wear resistance (Martindale test)

EN ISO 12947 – 2

At least 50,0002

1Exception for textiles of wool: >Level 3-4, and the pilling test can be continued to 10,000 rotations.

2For the purchase of furniture for schools and institutional furniture, the wear strength shall be at least 80,000 Martindales.

Documentation of the Requirement Specification:

The requirement shall be documented through a declaration from the manufacturer of the textiles, supported by relevant test reports, which show that the quality requirements in the table are met.

Fulfilment of the requirement may also be documented through access to a valid certificate verifying that the tendered furniture product is covered by certification developed in accordance with ISO 14024 (Type I or Type I-equivalent) which fulfils the requirement. E.g. the Swan ecolabel. For the requirement regarding wear resistance (Martindale), separate documentation must nevertheless be provided (declaration from the manufacturer of the textiles, supported by a relevant test report).

Information about the Requirement Specification:

This requirement should be stipulated in all procurements that include furniture with textiles.

To reduce the burden of documentation, the requirement at basic level is established so that it can be documented through a number of different marking schemes (in addition to own documentation of wear strength, as none of the most common ecolabels have a lower requirement regarding the Martindale test than is specified in this requirement). At advanced level, the requirement requires more documentation, because the supplier must submit relevant test reports (as many of the more common ecolabels do not stipulate such high requirements), but will be particularly relevant to stipulate in procurements where the textiles will be subjected to heavy wear.

Advanced
