Sustainable soy in feed concentrates
- Meal services
- Tropical Deforestation
- Contract Terms
The main purpose is to ensure that any soy in feed concentrates fed to the animals has been produced under sustainable conditions and not contributed to deforestation. This supports Norway’s climate goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, in accordance with sustainable development.
Eggs, meat and dairy products: If soy is used in feed concentrates for animals, this soy must have been from a sustainable source and not contribute to deforestation and forest degradation of tropical forests and peat marshes.
This means that the raw materials are produced under conditions that ensure:
- that natural forest and peat marshes are preserved
- that the soy can be traced back to the specific mill or farm
- fair working conditions, in accordance with national and international legislation, such as the ILO core conventions
Documentation of the Requirement Specification:
The requirement can be documented by certification of the soy in accordance with Pro Terra, RTRS (Round Table of Responsible Soy) or other relevant documentation. If the soy in the feed concentrates comes from a country with no tropical forest and has thus not contributed to tropical deforestation, documentation of the country of origin may be submitted. Canada, the USA and Poland are examples of such countries.
Suppliers shall submit documentation that the requirement has been met on request.
Soybean meal is an important source of protein in feed, and it is used in several types of animal feed. It is relevant to use the contract condition if your procurement includes products such as poultry, pork, beef, eggs, dairy products, etc.
If the supplier chooses to use documentation other than Proterra and/or RTRS, all the items listed above shall be based on an assessment of whether the documentation is to be regarded as “other relevant documentation.” The aforementioned labelling schemes for soy also encompass the protection of indigenous peoples and community areas and rights, including the right to free, prior and informed consent
